I was riding across town (2004 VRSCA Vrod) to visit a friend last week (a trip of about 30 kms one way) and the engine suddenly died about half way through the trip. It had been running perfectly up until then. I waited a couple of minutes and then attempted to start it again. It fired up, but I had to hold the revs extremely high for 20 secs or so and then it seemed to clear.
For the remainder of the trip there and back it ran perfectly, although I wasn't sure initially how it would run on the return journey, about 2 hours later.
The next day I decided to remove the EFI pump assembly from the tank and to check it out. Prior to removing it, I peered in the tank through the filler to see if the hoses to the pump had fractured, illustrated by a fuel haze. It all seemed fine.
As an aside, the fuel gauge had been reading erratically for quite a long time and I realize this is an issue with these units on this model bike. After removing the EFI assembly I checked the fuel hoses their connections as well as the electrical connectors. It was all good. I did note though, that the resistance strip for the fuel sender was tarnished a dark black. I cleaned it off with a 'very' fine abrasive foam rubber sanding pad.
After refitting the EFI assembly back into the tank the fuel gauge works perfectly again. (I don't ever run fuel with ethanol in it.)
As for the instant cutting out of the engine, I've read stuff on this Board that mentions the filter sock of the pump can clog over at the intake port.
Can this be verified, and if so, can the sock be removed and replaced with some alternatve filter that allows for periodic cleaning/maintenance?
As yet I've never added an injector cleaning product to the fuel in the tank. (Any thoughts on this?)
