So-- I've just killed my SECOND Shorai lithium battery. They're junk. I'm done with them.
Both batteries have been installed on my F in the past three years (model #LFX27L3-BS12) and I've used the Shorai digital battery maintenance cable (SHO-BMSCBL12) and the Shorai digital battery tender to keep them charged.
I got the first (new) battery as compensation for a local shop trashing my new tire when they put it on-- fair enough. Except that the battery literally fell apart on me within a year-- the top and sides of the casing essentially crumbled into pieces-- I literally pulled the positive terminal right out of the battery accompanied by all sorts of small black crumbles-- think like old bakelite falling apart. I talked to the Shorai tech support and they essentially blamed bike for heat-cycling the battery and causing the casing degradation (huh?). But, ok-- I got a second (new) battery for the price of shipping and just to be super-careful, wrapped the battery in DEI Reflect-a-Cool.
Fast forward to about 18 months later. The bike has been on the dedicated Shorai lithium battery charger since I put it away for the winter. I went to crank it up today and it was dead, dead, dead (although according to the charger it was in "storage" mode).
So, I'm done. The rumors of Shorai's (lack of) quality control are confirmed, at least for me. I'll be sourcing a new Ballistic battery and tender as soon as I can find somewhere that doesn't charge an arm and a leg.
I just wanted to warn the forum: Until Shorai gets their QC act together, I'd avoid them like the plague. I loved the fact that I took 14 lbs of weight off of the bike right near the triple tree, but the pathetic performance of the battery isn't worth it.
Grr.
Rant: Off.
