No cruise control - long trips - what to do?

Hi, I do longer trips once in a while and I'm about to push the sale button on a vrscf.

However, the cruise control on the new softails (and their bigger engines) appeal to me because of my needs for longer rides.

What do you do when going on trips for many hours on freeway? Is the thumb-wheel sufficient?
