So i have been chasing a new noise that started a few weeks ago and have taken apart the air box to make sure nothing was rattling against something or came loose, then many mentioned it may be exhaust leak.. took it completely apart and inspected the entire exhaust for pin holes or soot marks.. found none.. so i went ahead and replaced the gaskets just because..
Well i think i may have found the issue after all.. just such an odd thing... so i put everything back together, started up the bike to the enjoyment of the same dang tapping/rattle noise.. so im like yay.. i guess next step is the valve lash to check them.. but a friend goes to touch the muffler to see if it got hot already and as soon as he touched the exhaust the pitch of the noise changed.. so it confused me.. so i kept looking over everything to see if something was touching and vibrating... lo and behold i touch the end of the baffle and the noise was no longer audible that i was chasing..
So i take the bottom baffle out of the 16 gauge exhaust i have and the very end section comes complete out leaving the guts inside the pipe.. so i reach at it and a small section came out.. basically the baffle had rusted and broke into 3 sections on the bottom so i had to take the mufflers back off to push it out from the other end with a rod.. i didnt get the top baffle removed yet, but i started the bike up with it back on the bike and the noise is gone.. i guess it was tapping at the pulses of the exhaust.. traveling all the way up to the engine making it sound like it was an engine problem..
Ima look to see if i can find another tune for the exhaust without baffles tell i can find somehow to replace them if i decide to take some of the noise away.. i did put the very end back in the pipe and screwed it in tight so it appears to have a baffle....
